The Fish Sea .co.uk Welcome

Our family would come down to Cornwall, UK every year on holiday from Leeds and this is where I leaned to surf - I’m still lucky to be surfing in my 60’s… for now! Here are some photos from the good old days (I guess) and some more recent. In the ‘73 photo I am wearing a wetsuit made by my mum from a kit that you could buy from Exchange & Mart - you got neoprene sheets, glue, seam tape and paper pattern etc. In the photo the wetsuit was cut down because I’d worn the knees through. Having worn the knees of the wetsuit through I wore my own knees through too, such is the fun of surfing. I started surfing on a wooden bellyboard around ’63/64 and I can still feel the sand grating on my stomach as I rode all the way in. Those old wooden bellyboards have regained a bit of a fashion status again, they are an excellent surf vehicle and my dad and sister still use one!

A note about the old style leashes: They were made of an elastic outer tube with a thin rope inner. In a wipeout the elasticated outer would stretch until stopped abruptly by the ropey bit at which point your hip would dislocate. If you survived that then the elastic would pull the board back towards you at speed, requiring evasive action to avoid decapitation.
